Traditionally the Friday has the most music

The weather is nice all day, with the sun coming in a lot earlier than the day before. In the afternoon the highest temperature of SXSW this year so far is a cosy 85F. So it’s a special day again and we favor being outside as much as possible. That’s why the start is in Amelia’s wonderful back garden again. For some reason the PA is not working. Amanda Pearcy doesn’t mind, she does her nice show at ease, with help from guitar man Mark Viator. Next is G&S again with at first a nice show by Zoe Muth and the Lost High Rollers, a Seattle based country band. Nice songs, well played and sung. They were a surprise to me. Their new CD, ‘Starlight Hotel’ comes out on April 19th on Signature Sounds Records. They win my day price for the best title with ‘If I can’t trust you with a quarter, how can I trust you with my heart’. Wonderful! The reason I went over to G & S is to see one of my favorite artists, Eilen Jewell. Her mix of country and 60’s rock ‘n roll haunts me all the time. Eilen’s new CD, ‘Queen of the minor key’ is due coming out in June. In her 30 minute set she does a couple of new songs before closing up with an extended version of Johnny Kid’s 1960 hit ‘Shakin’ all over’ from her 2009 CD ‘Sea of tears’.

Meanwhile on the inside stage South Texas resident Bianca DeLeo is performing, backed up by a six piece band. Her beautiful mix of country and TexMex, a Texan border-like mixture is great. Bianca ’s new CD, ‘Love, guns and money’  will be released soon. My advance copy tells me it is great! Meanwhile in NeWorlDeli on Guadeloupe and 41st Jim Patton and Sherry Brokus  host their annual showcase of fine, mostly local, artists. The fabulous Ginn Sisters have a new CD out, ‘You can’t take a bad girl home’ with ten originals by Tiffany Ginn. They do a high voltage show with appealing vocals and some fine flute playing. Jim and Sherry are next. Playing wonderful songs from their latest (and fairly recent) CD ‘Ray of hope’. I particularly love Jim’s ‘Ballad of the Oxbow inn’, in which he describes his first meeting with his (at that time) future wife Sherry. Well done! Jim and Sherry are accompanied by Stuart and Hillary Adamson aka The Flying A’s, who play next. Their latest CD, ‘Til they shut it down’ is a great one full of fine Texan honky tonk country. I never had a better Reuben sandwich than the one they serve in the Neworldeli. Both the corned beef and the pastrami variety are superb.

After the NeworlDeli we return to the G & S to hear ‘The new mystery girl’ doing a rock ‘n roll show with Eric Hisaw on guitar. She turns out to be Chrissy Flatt! Dayna Kurtz is next and she is amazing. Just by herself, accompanying herself  on (slide) guitar and lap steel guitar. After Dayna’s great show I call it quits. Tired after three days and two nights of intensive listening to music I go to bed early.
